Myth #1: “Polyaspartic is just as strong as epoxy for the base.”

Fact: While polyurea or polyaspartic coatings make for fantastic clear topcoats, they are far from ideal direct-to-concrete base coats. In the presence of moisture, these quick-curing coatings cure even quicker (in less than 1 hour)! They simply don’t have time to deeply penetrate the concrete slab. The result? A thin, poorly-penetrating base coat that sits atop the slab. This makes it susceptible to moisture vapor (and resulting hydrostatic pressure) wicking up the porous concrete—especially in Nashville’s humid environment.

Conversely, a garage floor epoxy, specifically a moisture-mitigating, 100%-solids epoxy, cures slowly. It deeply penetrates and strongly bonds with the concrete slab, forming a moisture-resistant, long-lasting foundation.

Myth #2: “Moisture isn’t really a concern in garage coatings.”

Fact: It absolutely is. Between spring storms and summer humidity, vapor can rise through your slab and compromise a poorly bonded coating. Luckily, a high-build epoxy base coat forms a dense moisture vapor barrier that helps mitigate moisture vapor transmission and high hydrostatic pressure from below. Polyurea and polyaspartic base coats don’t offer the same level of protection.

Myth #3: “1-day systems are just as good.”

Fact: Speed often sacrifices quality. Many “1-day” systems use a polyurea or polyaspartic for both the direct-to-concrete base coat and topcoat to speed up installation. As great as these coatings are as top coats, they’re lousy base coats, especially under medium to high moisture conditions. So the speed of installation comes at the expense of adhesion and long-term durability.
